Shower, Interrupted
23rd May 2025
I was in the shower washing my hair when I heard a knock at the door, followed by Xena rushing down the stairs barking excitedly. I tried to quickly rinse my hair (bad idea in hindsight), dashed to put on my dressing gown and then downstairs to answer the door.
The delivery man asked, ‘Did I disturb you?’
‘No,’ I remarked, ‘I was just lying on the sofa watching TV.’
Unfazed, he said, ‘I need a security code from you.’
At this point, the suds, loosened by the rinse, had begun to trickle into my eyes. I fumbled around to find my phone and then the email with the code. I kept wiping my eyes with the sleeve of the dressing gown, but it did little to help.
I squinted to see the number, and it felt like I was taking an eye test. ‘Six,’ I said, ‘and I think that’s a three… That looks like a B…’
‘It’s numeric,’ interrupted the delivery man.
‘Erm… It could be an eight…’
He grabbed my hand, turned it towards himself, looked at the parcel, and asked, ‘Is this [address]?’
‘No,’ I replied, wiping more suds from my eyes. ‘It’s [my address].’
‘Oh, sorry,’ he sighed, walking away. ‘I’ll leave you to it.’
It was at that moment I realised I wasn’t even expecting a parcel today.
